For their annual Spring Concert at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Karen, Christopher, Melita and Olga will feature three vast and wide-ranging works by 19th century German composers. The program opens with Beethoven's uncharacteristically light and carefree String Serenade in D Major for violin, viola and cello. The piece displays the inherent qualities of each individual instrument and weaves them together with melodic and textural clarity. Polish-German composer Philipp Scharwenka's "Sonata Fantasia" in G Minor for viola and piano, written just before the turn of the 20th century, sets a moodier soundscape with its long-form lamentations and dramatic outbursts. An indisputable musical tour de force, the Piano Trio No.1 in B Major of Johannes Brahms was originally composed when he was 20 years old. At age 56, he returned to the piece and made extensive revisions. The resulting version is the one that is almost invariably played today; a masterful amalgam of bright-eyed passion and fully ripened poetic refinement.
